Because of a state waiver, Allegany County schools will end the year on June 14th, with June 21st the last day for teachers and staff. Had the waiver not been in place, students would have being going to school almost to the end of June. The Maryland State Board of Education approved a recent request from State Superintendent Dr. Nancy Grasmick that school districts be allowed to request waivers for up to five days, because of severe winter weather in February.
Woman Recovering at Burn Center
Sixty-one year old Margaret “Peg” Galvin is at the Bayview Burn Center, recovering from injuries suffered in a fire Friday evening at her Shriver Avenue home. She received first and second-degree burns. The fire caused $80,000 in damage to the structure and $50,000 in losses to the contents of the home. The fire originated in the kitchen, and the preliminary cause remains under investigation.
Man Removed from Train
A Philadelphia man was removed from an Amtrak train Sunday evening, after becoming disruptive. Forty-year old Duane Maurice Bee had allegedly been yelling and causing a disturbance on the train, and Amtrak officials had requested he be taken off. Bee was charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, failure to obey a lawful order and making a false statement to a police officer. He was held on $7500 bail.
Dam Work in Keyser Delayed
The $2 million refurbishment of the Keyser Dam Site 14 is being delayed, due to design issues raised by the Army Corps of Engineers. The work has been pushed back from April to sometime late this fall. The project is being funded almost exclusively with federal money, and will ensure it meets current dam standards.
Carpendale Hopes to be Better Prepared for Snowstorms
Carpendale is hoping to be reimbursed for the cost of its most recent snow removal. The total was less than $2,000, and it is up to the federal government, whether or not to reimburse the town. Special recognition was given to Earl Shook, the town’s maintenance foreman, who had Carpendale’s streets passable, long before the Department of Highways was able to open the main highway.
Sex Offender Arrested in Hagerstown
A registered sex offender from Frederick failed to notify authorities when he moved to Hagerstown and was arrested last week. Barney Willis was not at his reported address earlier in the year, and investigators were told he had moved. Maryland law requires that a sex offender notify authorities within five days, when they move.
